Even before the PR team of Nike Basketball had the chance to send out the official press release, fans of Kobe Bryant already branded this pair with an assemblage of nicknames, everything thing from the “Greem Mamba” to the more common “The Grinch”. Despite the colorful naming contest, the actual name of this Green Eye Monster is “Green Means Go”, 1 of 3 from Nike Christmas Day Collection, “Signal Your Color”, a play on traffic signals. But considering how his opponent this Christmas Day, LeBron James, is the most hated man in basketball now. Fans are abiding to the nickname “The Grinch”. As with the character from the children’ book by Dr. Seuss, fans are egging for Bryant and the L.A. Lakers to steal the Christmas’ joy right from Miami Heat as he negates them with a win tonight. For the rest of us however, the Kobe Bryant x Nike Zoom Kobe VI(6) – Christmas Day 2010 “Green Means Go” will be available tomorrow, December 26th, at select Nike retailers.

We gave you a sneak peek of Kobe Bryant’s latest signature shoe back in September, but today Nike Basketball has officially unveiled it. Introducing the Nike Zoom Kobe VI(6). Trust me, you’ll like what you see…

“The Nike Zoom Kobe VI(6) is a very character driven shoe with the alter ego of the Black Mamba prominently featured,” says Bryant. “We continue to evolve the technology to make it a performance based shoe, but aesthetically you haven’t seen a shoe pop like this before. It brings to life what drives me.”

“The Black Mamba to Kobe means being one of the deadliest predators on the planet,” says Eric Avar, Creative Director of Nike Performance Footwear. “That’s his approach to every game – he’s very calculating and he’s very quick.”

Avar led a team of creatives who worked with Bryant to bring the Black Mamba to life in the Nike Zoom Kobe VI(6). The shoe’s upper features unique polyurethane “islands” that emulate a snake’s skin and increase or decrease in size throughout the shoe to protect against abrasion and increase durability exactly where needed. To add a lighthearted spin and play off the reptile’s deadly venom, “Venomenon” is inscribed on the front outsole.
